Overview

What is a DGFT Digital Signature Certificate?

A Class 3 DGFT Digital Signature Certificate is a government-recognised electronic credential used by Import Export businesses to digitally sign and submit applications on the DGFT portal, ICEGATE and other foreign trade filing systems. It carries full legal validity under the Information Technology Act, 2000 and is issued only by a CCA-licensed Certifying Authority.

Why it's required: The DGFT portal and ICEGATE require a valid Class 3 Digital Signature before accepting an IEC application, license request, shipping bill or bill of entry from a business.

Who needs it: Any business engaged in cross-border trade — importers, exporters, manufacturers, merchant exporters, customs house agents, freight forwarders and logistics companies — needs this certificate to file electronically under their own identity.

How it works: The certificate is issued to a FIPS-certified USB token after document submission and video verification, and can then be used to sign documents directly within the DGFT and ICEGATE portals.
